    Previous employer course cost

    Good evening gents,
Tried googling with little success so hope you could provide some advise?

I am looking to move into the contracting field. However it would mean leaving my current employer and I have a signed agreement that should I leave I have to pay back course fees which amount to about 6k. I have negotiated a decent day rate for an 8 month contract but would I be able to take money from my company to pay for this or would I have to take it from wages ?

    Many thanks

Why do you think your new company would be able to pay this? It would be your personal liability, not the responsibility of the new company.

Of course you will be able to take salary or dividends out to pay this, but bear in mind it will be a while before those funds would be available. I'd also expect your employer to deduct what they can from your final salary payment(s).

They cant just take it from your wages. You have to agree to this - and before the training. E.g clause in contract or seperate agreement.

They must also be able to reasonably show the actual costs. Bit of a grey area with in house training.

Certainly some recoupment is likely available to the employer but the repayment schedule has to be reasonable.

and yes, obviously it needs to be paid from your own resources.

Get it in to your head from day one. The money in the company account belongs to the company. The money in your account belongs to you. Until you withdraw money from the company account in the proper was they are completely separate things. Company, you.... Different. OK?
