Anyone used a Big 4 accountant?

I've been in touch with someone from a Big 4 accountancy practice - was wondering if anyone has tried using one as their main accountant?

The big 4 - PWC, KPMG, EY & Deloitte - are I would suggest utterly irrelevant to the contractor and SME market - although I do know that KPMG have launched some SME services - KPMG enterprise - which will crash and burn very soon IMO. You'd pay through the nose for expertise which isn't relevant to you.

In contractor circles, we have a big 3 - SJD, Nixon Williams and Brookson. AFAIK, two are excellent, one is rubbish.

Re 2nd para, snigger...but from my experience that'd seem about right.

Re 1st para, agree. Getting them to do a contractors accounts would be like me asking the firm that built the Olympic stadium if they'd put up some shelves for me.

I trained with KPMG back in the 90s - can't imagine they would have an affordable offering for a contractor given even the junior staff are charged out at exorbitant rates.

They are in the process of rolling out Enterprise which is for SMEs so possibly the contractor model might fit. Cheapest limited company deal is £275 pcm do definitely at the "bluddy hell that's dear" end of the spectrum.

The guy who painted my dad's fence also painted the Forth Road Bridge.

How did he find time to paint the fence?

                    Forth (Railway) Bridge being pedantic
