    Laptop wont boot

I have a laptop that is about 2 years old. A few weeks ago I tried to turn it on and only the power light comes on. I have had a quick google and have tried the following

    1) disconnect the battery and try just using mains - didn't work
    2) hold down the power button to clear static - didn't work
    3) try and boot from a recovery disc - didn't work

Nothing has made the screen turn on, the only vital signs I have seen are the power light comes on and the disc drive makes a noise.

The laptop was only £500ish a few years ago (i5 HP), is it worth trying to repair or should I bin it and buy a new one?

I know a number of HP models had issues with GPUs overheating – from my own unfortunate experience with a low end pavilion - I’d take a look on their support forum to see if your model is included in any extended manufacturing warranty as you may be entitled to a free repair/replacement. If not, you could do a reflow (plenty of youtube clips out there to show you how to do it if you’re not familiar) and get a couple of extra weeks/months life out of it.

Also take a look at these:

Crack the case open and clear out the fluff. See if that helps.

Do you have an external monitor that you can plug into the laptop?

I had a similar problem with my DV6, take off the battery then hold down the power button for 30 secs then put the battery back and and hit the power button. Worked for me, best of luck.

Then get a vacuum cleaner and hose and suck all the crap out of the vents. This made an old IBM laptop I had run 20C cooler !!

When you say the power light comes on... Just constant or blinking? Most manufacturers use the lights to indicate hardware/firmware problems. Have a google of the manufacturers support forum?

I always clean the vents and even have compressed air to clean them regularly. It comes down to poor design it's a common fault with HP's

I just take mine back to the Apple shop and they give me a new one.

Laptops always seem to stop working if you don't use them for a long time. Found same with other electronic equipment like pedometers, answering machines, CD players. My theory is they feel unwanted and die of a broken heart.
