preventing pear to pear software installs

    Hi,

I have been asked to do a foreigner for somebodies home PC.
Not seen it yet, but have been told kids use it for downloading music.
therefore I expect it to have bearshare, limewire, etc etc installed on it.
once I have cleaned it up & removed these apps is there a way to prevent them from being reinstalled ?

PC likely to be running XP home sp2

Create a limited user account for each child.. Installing software normally required admin privileges.. The downer would be if they use uTorrent, which can be run from a USB drive, and requires no installation..

If they have a router for their broadband, there is always the option of preventing P2P protocols (depending on the router)..

Hmm... don't think you could stop the install of the software without setting up a different user accounts for the kids and revoking admin rights.

May be a way to block the ports that P2P typically uses tho.. but this wouldn't actually prevent the install of the malware that is usually bundled with kazaa et al.

Failing that, give them a lesson in torrenting. If you can't be good, be safe

Very easy, just remove your PEAR installation dir from the include_path directive in your php.ini (e.g. c:\php\pear).

This way even if they manage to download some PEAR packages they will not work. Just make sure they don't have access to the PHP.ini, if they do they can easily re-enable PEAR again.
