    How to get paid for a few days work - umbrella or ltd?

    Hi everyone,

    I have a permanent job but was recently asked to do a couple of days work at another company which I accepted (my current employer was fine with me doing this during my holidays). This was all very last minute so I didn't have time to decide/setup an umbrella or ltd company. Work was done via an agency so I just need to invoice them (or get an umbrella to) when I'm ready. The problem is, it was only a couple of days with a possible couple more next week but that will probably be it for the year. I've read that the ltd company route is the most tax efficient but all the accountants I've seen are set up to charge a monthly fee.

    Can someone help suggest how I should proceed?

    Should have agreed how to invoice with the agency before working.Try to get your employer to invoice them.

      Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but an umbrella company is not really and option - all the ones I know of have a minimum contract period which is usually 4-6 weeks

          A limited company is only tax efficient if you are trading for 6 months and expect to invoice at least £30k. If not, the professional fees will outweigh any tax benefits. You would also have needed to set it up before starting the contract.

          Stek is spot on - just invoice as a sole trader. You'll need to inform HMRC asap that you'll need a tax return for the current year, which will be much cheaper to get done for a one-off fee from an accountant.

                Surely a normal agency would have wanted details of everything before he started though, rather than patiently waiting until after the work was done....?
