Interesting. There I was thinking I should throw myself at hmrc mercy I thought I would check the definition of "own vehicle". Hmrc of course don't so itepa for the definition.
except it isnt there either. But s229 4 b states that 229 1 (amaps) applies to everything that is not a company provided vehicle which is defined elsewhere.
there is nothing about it needing to be the employee own vehicle in any shape or form.
of course it could have been changed since then. When I find the most recent act I shall check. But it seems to me that at the moment I have done nothing wrong - even if it is contrary to hmrc guidance.
feel free to sponsor my escape from the scrubs in a couple of years when it turns out I am entirely wrong.
I must accept that when the rest of the entire world disagrees with me there is at least a slim chance I am wrong.
I agree with you
My theory has always been that if I've provided the vehicle, then I should be able to claim mileage as long as I'm not claiming anything else.
I've never used a hire car for business, though, but I'm pretty sure that if I had done and paid for it myself, I'd have claimed the mileage to pay for it.

Same for me.

My own car is high maintenance and it is not worth spending a lot on it - what do they say 'you cant polish a turd'.
I would like to buy a big barge perhaps an old S Class Merc, so that I can cruise - spending 4 hours plus on the motorway, is not my cup of tea as I don't enjoy motorway driving.
However, getting home quickly and safely is more of a priority (than making or not making on petrol the allowance). I am 15 miles from the airport on both sides, so 50 mins in the taxis and 50 mins for the flight is not so bad.

Or a 5 series Beemer. 100k miles on the clock for about 6k, put another 20-30k on it and still sell it for 5 - 5.5k.
I'd much rather drive than bugger around with airports and taxis but each to his own.

Don't forget the 2hr checkin/security etc, think I got my Leeds-Dublin one down to an hour and five minutes.

I used to fly from Manchester to London each week, and then when the flight prices rocketed, I changed to going by train. I have no intention of driving that route on a Monday morning and Friday night, plus parking etc. in London makes it a daft idea.
I used to head north, though, and drive to Edinburgh and Glasgow because they were nicer drives and I needed some easy way to get from the flat I was staying in and the client office.
The only time I've regularly used a taxi was to get from Heathrow to Slough for one project - used to ring as soon as the plane landed, and they'd be waiting at collection by the time we'd got the bus from the middle of nowhere to the terminal building and walked out the front. Not worth the hassle any other time.
