Is it not possible to add a dedicated physical Fibre HBA to a VM, doesn't appear in the 'Add' dialogue...

You can do this with IBM POWER and even Oracle LDOM's - bit annoying...

I think you can as long as the server chipset & card support VT-d (directed IO) extensions.

You can. I'm sat at Heathrow so can't access the how to, but Google RDM and vSphere. You can access the LUN as a raw device mapped datastore presented directly to the VM

Cheers fellas, seems the Sun X4450 doesn't support VT-D, however slapped a fibre HBA in a T5220 SPARC box and I can do the needful with it from the primary domain, or I/O domain if I set that up - need to google that...
