    XP Admin Privilieges

Ok, had a couple of days in hospital and took laptop. Disabled network 'cos no appropriate wireless.

Returned home, turned on laptop, attempted to enable wirelss and got no enable (greyed) in the menu. Looked at properties and get "some of the controls on this property sheet are disabled because you do not have sufficient privileges to access or change them".

So attempt to get into user accounts and I get the "you need an administrator login" login screen.

So, my prinileges have kindly been knocked by XP from admin to user. Niw, local IT support won't give me the password of the "Administrator" account they built the machine with, there is another user account with admin privs on it, but I can't get the pw for that. I can't run system restore due to lack of privileges. I do have a backup on USB disk that I might be able to get at.

Any ideas how I can "discover" the password for the accounts in order to give myself admin privileges again. Or anything else I can do to get out the mess.

The IT support guys say "no problems bring it in, we'll sort it in 5 minutes". But since they are 150 miles away and I am currently not allowed to drive this is a bit of an issue. Obviously they can't rop in due to the lack of network.

    Aby helpful ideas ??

    Cheers.

Ther is a tool (mentioned in earlier threads) that will allow you to rest admin passwords, but then you customer support guys wil be a bit pissed off.

How about using a piece of wire to connect the laptop to your network?

I coldn't give a flying fig about hacking of the support guys But I'' dop a backup first.

Thanks for the tip about utilities. But:-

      1) Laptop has the ethernet card also disabled
      2) My employer providede laptops with no floppy double

Now if I can get the utility onto a boot able CD and the laptop can boot from it then I could be onto something.

          Try this page:
          http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_admini...r_password.htm

You might want to borrow (or buy) a USB floppy as the best solution is the Nordahl hack disk.

Now I am an employee of big co this is not an option (even though it's sensible). I( can't but an additional copy of VMware to save me a regular 2 day rebuild of a reference system (i.e. the put the lab system under VM ware and me run it on my machine under VMware also).

              Hi ASB,

Free version : Cain and Abel http://www.oxid.it/cain.html - good software and you can hack (decipher) the password

Money version : ERD Commander http://www.winternals.com/Products/A...k/Default.aspx - works instantly but you can only reset the password (it's a 5 min work indeed )

              Hope this helps

              Victor

I remembered I got a USB disk with the PC for the kids at XMAS. Dusted it off and reset the administrator PW.

Now put myself back in the administrators group.

Only problem is that outlook appears to be spectacularly slow, but that might just be the corporate network. Or maybe it's downloading a million updates.

Quite likely. I seem to recall restoring it from some sort of image and somehow it ended up with an admin account without a password. Odd coincidence, but never mind.
