Decent OCR for scanning bank statements

Any suggestions?, have tried a couple, but while they were quite good at various documents of one sort or another they didn't seem to be very useful for what I wanted, namely scanning a bank statement where the result is something I can easily cut/paste into Excel.

I use OmniPage and it's very good.

How good for cutting and pasting in Excel I don't know though.

Yep, that's one of the ones I tried. Generally very good, but with things like statements the result still needs a lot of tweaking where in the end it would be almost as quick to type it manually.

The problem isn't the character recognition, it's having the software format the result as a nice (simple) column/table.

Can't you get downloadable statements from your online banking?

Unfortunately didn't have that option at the time.
