Anybody got a list of free "web services" that can be used in applications..

Just looking at the possibilities of doing some new development work for practice.

Currently I have this from wikpedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_ser...g_Web_Services

Particulary would like something that has companies or agencies listed on them. Might be able to create some useful contractor apps with that..

Don't you just use www.regexplib.com for that?

            Yes and no.

The regexp will tell you if the email is a valid format, not that the actual email address exists (ie there is a mail server with a mailbox of that name).

The web service goes through the handshake process with the email server to see if it would accept email at that address.

Ideally you use the regexp and the web service to validate an email address.

I have an e-commerce site where people fill in a whole load of information and then go on to mistype their email address (usually their fecking names FFS)

Yeah I have the same type of kit. I set up a bounce mailbox and read that using Sockets (.Net) daily and remove the send email flag on addresses that hard bounce (i.e. don't contain the word Retry). Far better than getting the load up front by validating and doesn't unsubscribe people who's mailservers are down while you validate.

Actually does anyone have details of a test web service I can do some security testing against? Nothing dodgy, I just need the wsdl file so I can do some configuration my side and test with stuff like controlling access to certain methods based on authentication scheme and authorisation policy and such like.

Zero touch on web service - honest Guv!!!

                  Older and ...well, just older!!

Write your own: http://www.asp.net/quickstart/webservices/ or use nuSOAP if you are a PHP person.
