    Preferred file systems under Linux?

What file systems does the panel recommend for Linux?

The default nowadays for Ubunti (and Linux Mint) is ext4, but that gives problems - see "Performance regressions with ext4 under certain workloads".

In particular, the latest release of VirtualBox issues dire warnings if it finds a virtual disk on ext4 and sets some parameter or other for those disks which doesn't give optimal performance (sorry, 'tis Friday afternoon and I can't find the link any more).

I am currently using Winders as a VirtualBox host, so that bit isn't currently a concern, but I do tend to hammer file systems a lot, thus my question. Currently using a mixture of ext4 for the boot device and ext3 for data, but Ext3 disadvantages puts me off that.

Surely VirtualBox as it's coming from Sun should play nicely with ZFS?
If you're doing little in the host OS, you might consider OpenSolaris as the host OS

      That's an idea I hadn't thought of.

      Thanks. It's certainly worth exploring.

In "The more I come across Winders restrictions, the more I hate it" mode. Which is a shame, because there are some good things in there.

I went with ext4 for everything - it gives good overall performance. I hear xfs is pretty good but haven't tried it myself.

xfs is Irix's old filesystem from SGI land. Does Linux have it now?

zfs is the daddy though, but I prefer AIX's jfs2 and the built-in Volume Management - it's utter class...

I think there are some licensing issues with zfs, I think its only possible to run it outside the kernel. though I have heard there are some ports going on so maybe one day.

            Yeah, anything better than LVM.

              WHS, AIX LVM is great

I use ext4 on the linux boxes I have, works well enough for me.

I'll save that for when they make it work on the rootvg

There's always loads of spare PP's on rootvg!
