USB 3.0

I notice USB 3.0 specification devices have slowly started to filter through now.

Bought* a USB 3.0 external HDD and, when researching, noticed that the USB 3.0 standard have their own cables.

The flat "A" connector is the same but the chunky "B" connector is different.

I forsee another round of overpriced cables in stores.


* Before anyone asks, I don't have a USB 3.0 compliant laptop but the price difference between a USB 2.0 ONLY drive and a USB 3.0 one was only £7.

Ahh but what you did was you looked on the net and found a cheap cable. Most people would simply go to PC world and pay well over the odds.

Last time I bought USB cables (2 of them with the new micro connector) I got them from ASDA for £3 each
anyone who buys anything from PC World deserves to have their wallet emptied

Especially if you needed the data right now and not on Monday at the earliest as is the case with online shops.

Fortunately, USB is backwards compatible so you can still sip your data, albeit more slowly over usb2.0 connection/cable.

Being in a rush isn't an excuse to go to PC World. There are plenty of other shops who have the same stuff but at a reasonable price.

Was quoted £15 for a USB2 printer cable from PC World a few years back. Told them where they could stick it. Walked across the same shopping park and found Asda, Tesco, B&Q, Homebase and Wilkersons all sold USB2 printer cables. And it was Sunday. Went with a Wilkersons one at £1.99. It's still sat between my printer and PC today, having given years of faultless service.

And don't even get me started over the £70 PC World wanted for an HDMI cable a couple of years ago when I got my first HDTV. Got one from a local shop - and a decent one - for £7. Oh, and I got the TV (Pioneer Kuro) for £400 less than PC World/Comet wanted for it from a local specialist, who delivered it personally the "next day". So, you don't always have to travel as far as "the Net" to beat PC World.
