I want to buy a desktop but I have specific requirements and I want to be able to "build" it myself, i.e. choose each component myself (RAM, HD, Optical drive, Processor, graphic card, soundcard etc), hat is the best website to do this?

I have looked at Dell obviously, but I want to compare. The Dell website does what I want, in the sense that it allows me to select amongst a reasonable selection of processors, RAM size, HD sizes etc. Are there other sites like this?

I have looked at nusystems.co.uk too as I want to build a digital audio workstation, but prices there are quite steep compared to Dell's.

Any other recommendations?

Just buy the best bits from ww.ebuyer.com and the likes.

Case, motherboard, CPU, RAM, etc.

It's the best way. Build it yourself in a couple of hours.

Highly recommend the dual core AMD CPU's.

Good point - any of you in a position to offer insights into the AMD vs Intel debate?
- which one is best?
- what is the AMD equivalent to the Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz with 2MB cache for example?
- do AMD processors work well in a dual core configuration?

Oh, and thanks to MrsGoof, Dim Prawn and Darmstadt for your suffestions - I will check them. Mrs Goof I have already checked Alienware but they are quite expensive, aren't they? I know we are filthy rich contractors but still...

I've just picked up a 64 bit AMD dual core and it rockets. I also build dual core AMD Opteron systems (just done an e326 with 2 dual core processors) and we're using them because they're faster than their Intel counterparts. However depending on what you're doing then 2 single core will be faster than a single dual core, particularly with multi threading.

Hi Spec machines from the likes of Dell etc are actually the cheapest way to purchase a PC. However, the minute you want to customise anything they actually work out more expensive than building your own from parts:
