alternative to Basecamp

You could have a look at ActiveCollab. I haven't used it myself, it costs for the (perpetual) license, and you have to host it yourself.
However I know somebody who's started using it at his business in preference to Basecamp, and he seems happy. There are some suggestions in the comments to that post, too. -
ProjectSpaces
Check out ProjectSpaces. Not free but you can try it out for 30 days, without any credit card commitment. It's the simplest tool for online project management I have found, and yet still has all the functionality you could need.
