    Choppy surfing

Totally baffled at this one. Round at outlaws looking at FIL laptop. Surfing has been choppy for a while and he suspects software problem. I have checked and Windows seems healthy, no HDD thrashing, Memory available, no network bottlenecks.

But surfing is a fairly staccato affair. Symptoms are this.

Open browser. Get google page. Search. Click on link. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Click stop. Click on link again. Straight there.

Makes for a very unpleasant surfing experience all this random hanging.

This is happening in IE8 and Firefox. The linux box surfs fine. Seeing as all the usual windows meters check out fine, anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?

I get this sometimes on pages that have Flash-y things in them. Does it happen with all pages?

Think I got it Zips. I ran ethereal / wireshark. Loads of NBNS chat (Netbios)

Turned the blighter off. Much better. For now anyways.

Does explain why Ubuntu box was surfing ok.

      Feeling quite smug.

Can you claim a BJ off the MIL too?

Sounds like it could be a DNS issue where primary DNS server is down so no response and a large wait time until it drops across to secondary DNS which is fine and responding instantly.

Or i may just have wasted a post, really ought to read the rest of the thread before jumping in.
