which laptop?, Dell XPS 16 or Sony FW51

I am in need of a laptop and have narrowed down to a Sony VGN-FW51 and a dell studio XPS 16. which is the better of the two?

Main issue i have with Sony is that they charge you fortune to replace parts as you have to return to them. while its easier to pick spare parts from ebay from dell.

    cheers

If you're concerned about getting things fixed if they break then get the Dell with the complete onsite cover.
It'll cost you a couple of hundred quid extra but covers accidental damage as well as warranty.
They are flexible on price as well, although strangely the sales team is based in India, paid for support is based in Ireland (at least thats where I get forwarded to)

Sony will come with a hard disk 99% full of useless proprietary DRM stuffed applications you don't need or want. And if it goes wrong it will cost a fortune to repair.

        PS. The Dell.

It comes with glossy screen. You'll either love looking constantly at your own reflection whilst you work or you'll find it very distracting and annoying.

          good point

have you considered the Precision M4400?
I've the previous incarnation of this, the M65 and it's rock solid and has a fantastic screen

When I was looking at the 13" XPS earlier in the year I was put of by all the reviews saying how hot it ran.

This was due to their being one vent on the back of the laptop which is blocked when you open the macine to use, bit of a design flaw

Might be worth checking if you have the same issue on the 16"

One of the reviews of the Dell XPS 16 says it runs so hot you cannot call it a laptop as it is too hot to be used on your lap.

My XPS was a peace of expensive sh*t. Burns up, graphics card melts, hinges on screen not strong enough... constant phone calls trying to sell stuff etc etc.

Haven't used that particular Sony model but currenlty using a z series, and once you get all the crap off (DRM etc as above) it runs like a dream. Also had a TX model previously that was great.
