Do you want something for a dedicated media centre pc or just a replacement for Windows Media Player?

media centre pc type thang, if linux was up to up we'd have that instead.

If it was possible to use summat other than wmc to run the system.

MythTV - based on Ubuntu - never got round to installing it myself but maybe worth a search or it may even prompt some comments about it.

Indeed. I have used it. A bit of a pig to set up but well worth it. Driver support under linux for video capture cards is limited so go Hauppauge all the way and you'll be fine.

I think there is a pre rolled version called MythBuntu, or maybe I just dreamt it .....

No, not going mad, after a brief search found here

hmm will make the suggestions to my "technical engineer"

Though am surprised he hasn't set the suggested os up as he's running linux on everything else in the house.

Have a look at Popcorn Hour. http://www.popcornhour.com

I've got one sitting under my TV in the living room connected via homeplugs to my QNAP NAS (linux box, torrent bitch, video server, etc.)

Advantage of this is that there are no 'moving parts' in the living room, meaning the only noise comes from the TV speakers. Having experienced the background sounds generated by an XBox 'media server', this can only be a good thing.
