    MS Dynamics CRM

Do you think there is a future with this? It seems like it could be a good generic development platform despite being marketed as CRM specific.

If it takes off like Sharepoint did then maybe it could be a good bet?

My gut feel is MS will do the usual and wait until thousands of people have invested their time and money in it before quietly dropping it. MS have the attention span of a 3 yr old.

Yes - infact there seems to be a big market already

      See above

The issue at the moment though is that there are 3 dynamics products (CRM, NAV and AX)
Each of them seem to have a completely different back end architecture.
At some point microsoft will need to do some work in terms of bringing them all inline to a common platform which will probably mean having to relearn any skills you've built up on a certain dynamics product.

Microsoft themselves have seen its potential as a generic relational application development platform and have started pushing it as such - Google for 'microsoft xRM' to see what their long-term strategy is for it.

I hope they aren't going to drop it anyway, as I've been betting the skill farm on it for two years now (as a permie).

I get the impression that xRM is the Access 2 / VB3 for the modern age.
