Where do people dispose of their old tech gear?

I think my council recycling centre accepts 'electronics goods', but what about computer components, old memory modules, etc.

Hmm... a call to them on Tuesday is in order me thinks.

That reminds me... somewhere I've got several 5¼" floppies containing the 808[8|6] assembly language source code of some of the games I worked on in the Eighties. I also have an Atari ST 3½" which contains the source code for my implementation of Forth on that platform.

IIRC, all these things have since been copied to a hard disk. The only problem would be working out which one

My local authority was one of the first to address this issue. For many years there's been some organisation, funded (partially at least) that takes old computer kit and either re-uses it for projects in the Third World, or has it properly recycled

Well, that used to be the case; I wouldn't be too surprised to find that the mob now in control have shut that down in favour of a project that slaughters villagers' goats in the Third World in order to create business opportunities for the local polytechnic

I have a two year rule.
If I've not touched it for 2 years it goes, which is why our house is full of Mr P's ancient crap and there's nothing of mine in it!
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

Er! It might come in handy one day!

Ok love, I'll get rid of these old green screens and the 5 1/4" floppy drives, and all the really old stuff.

But luv, these are colour monitors! they all work!

Ok, I'll chuck half of them out

It'll mean two trips to the tip, I'll never get 8 monitors in the boot of the car!

The draw back with this is that a month or two later you say to yourself, 'why did I chuck that out;!
This is an area where Sod's Law rules absolutely. You will need a bit of kit within a month of chucking it.

You just have to be ruthless and accept that this will happen. I had a grand clearout a few years ago and now see good prices for some of the stuff that I chucked.

Even if it goes for £1, someone will come and collect this junk from you, saving yourself time and petrol

I binned my old books the other day. Including the Camel Book ('the' Perl book) and O'Reilly C# 3rd ed.

Could have got a few quid on fleaBay but just couldn't be arsed.

As for computers, I got shot of my (legacy) desktop systems years ago.
