Is it not the case you only get one phase of power delivered to domestic properties?

Depends on the size/configuration. My previous place was so big (and had storage heaters) that different parts of it were on different phases.

Your old machine never had three phase, or two phase, just different terminals for the supply.

Never heard of two phase stuff though - 3 phase or single..............interesting.....maybe the heating elements and motor need to be on different phases due to high current draw?
