Silly Blackberry question

I've only had my Blackberry for a few days and there is an icon on the screen that I'm curious about. Looked through the owners book and can't see a reference to it.

Blackberry Curve 8310

Small globe under the battery icon with a number next to it. This number has slowly risen to 8 over the 5 days I've had the Blackberry. I'm presuming it is something to do with the Internet?

You've set up a push service (probably weather) - if you do a "Mark Prior Opened" they'll disappear.
