Does a Laptop have a motherboard battery

I bought a laptop about 18 months ago and recently, when I've unplugged from the mains (e.g. to carry it into another room) and re-plugged in again, the system clock has resert itself to 2006.

Now I know that desktop machines have a motherboard battery in them to keep bios settings going when the machine isn't being used but I wouldn't have thought that this was necessary for a laptop.

So, either the bios battery on the motherboard needs replacing or the laptop battery keeps power to the bios and I only need to replace the main battery (my hoped for choice as this does not entail taking the laptop back to where I bought it).

Any ideas/thoguhts would be most appreciated.

PS. I bought my first laptop from another supplier and I had no problems with it, despite similar use.

Yes, laptops do have motherboard batteries, which retain BIOS settings in the same way as a desktop.

EDIT: you can probably replace this yourself, if you're brave enough to disassemble the laptop.

No, I'll get the place where I bought it to replace it as it shouldn't be failing this soon anyway.

If that place is somewhere like PC World, do make sure you have a good backup as they are likely to do virus scans / reformat drive / re-install windows / etc before fixing the real problem

If they do then I'll sue them for a new laptop.

My data = my livelihood and is worth far more than the value of a new laptop. I'm sure yours is too.

They will also look over your porn collection for anything good to copy or worth grassing you up to the police. If you are a celeb in any way they will first load some on and then grass you up to the police, but only after selling the story to the red tops.

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Good call - taking it to bits could invalidate your warrantee.
