I got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 recently, after damaging my powershot and have to say - it's the dogs bollocks! 10x optical zoom, tonnes of scene modes etc - only small complain is it's slightly bulky, btu it still fits in my jeans pocket so it'll do for me.

I'm strictly amateur though so take what I say with a pinch of salt!

A Canon Ixus or new Panasonic only.

Do NOT get a Sony, they have the worst compacts ever made.

I have a P12 (very old now). It's a good way to get a half-decent underwater setup on the (sort-of) cheap as they make a hard case (c. 40m) for most of their compacts.

Tell me about it - discovered the waterproof casing for my G9 costs around £140! Just for a bit of plastic!

Just been playing with my new Panasonic Lumix FS5 - great size as I wanted something light and easy to carry around and the Image Stabilisation is good for an amateur like me too. It starts up really quickly so it makes quick picture taking quite easy.
