Where does the ***SPAM*** tag get added?

Hi folks, I've had a look around on Google for this but didn't find anything useful.

I'm curious: I send an email to someone I know. In his email inbox the subject line is intact. When he replies, the subject lines comes back as:

***SPAM*** Re: Hello

Where does the "***SPAM***" tag get added? My email provider?

If yes, does this indicate that the sending domain has been used for sending spam?

Just curious like, if anyone knows. Thanks.

Normally it is added by his mail server or some piece of software he has installed on his machine..

It will be on the receiving server, good bit of software as long as you don't overcook the rules. It doesn't mean that the mail has come from a verified spammer address, just that the algorithms that have checked the mail have marked it as most likely to be spam.

Look at the message headers. Spam Assassin (if set up right) should tell you what tests it failed to get the spam score particularly high.

You can turn that off so that the end user doesn't see the score assigned. This doesn't mean it is set up incorrectly, just that the mail server admin has decided not to add a bunch of meaningless (to the user) information on the top of every mail they receive.
