On a similar subject I am considering bukding a PC and utilising the LG Blu Ray RW ad HD read optical drive. Quad dal core processor and tulip hot graphicscard with HDMI out.
Anybody got one/built one or got any reasons why I shouldnt?

I am considering a new PC anyway. I am not sure if Blu Ray or HD will win out as the best technology (I favour Blu Ray, but am not sure it will win) so would like the capability to do both. I am also loath to keep up with playstations and xboxes.
The PC would provide complete entertainment system broadcast round the house, provide gaming solutions and all PC requiremnts too.

Can you stream from the Blu Ray drive in a PC to your TV (without another device)?

Don't think you can do it in full 1080p HD yet - don't they have some funny copy protection built into the video cards and tellies now (HDCP)?

blockbuster have chosen to drop HD DVD from most stores to concentrate on blu ray, this was based on the fact that blu ray rentals were way above the HD DVD rentals

Blu-Ray has more layers of DRM, therefore I favour HD-DVD. Not that I have an HD TV yet of course...

I was more thinking of the physical logistics i.e. how do you get the video feed on to the TV from the PC.

I guess if you had a laptop with a Blu Ray drive and (digital) video out it would work but a desktop PC with full sized drive would be a bit impractical. Or am I missing something?

This was a bit skewed by the fact that they also allow people to rent PS3s so a good chunk of those rentals were try-outs. However, I've seen rumblings that Warner Brothers (who until now have published HD-DVD and BluRay versions of their discs) are about to go BluRay only.

I can actually see a situation where BluRay might get the movie market and HDDVD gets the PC market... don't ask me why though, just a gut feeling.

Depending on your tv there are a number of options. If you have a nice new full HD flat telly, you can run a long VGA cable for example, or there are even VGA->Ethernet->VGA kits available. If there's no VGA connector you could get a graphics card with a video out - some even have HDMI connectors on there.

Or else use one of those wireless sender things, but there would be very little point in using BluRay instead of DVD.
