The router is the Orange wireless one - forget the real name but it's one where they take over the phone line as well.....

Yes, my ethernet port is enabled - as far as I know. It has never worked, though. We tried connecting earlier this year but failed but then we had the dial-up in reserve and never bothered to get it fixed. We phoned up Orange before we bought the system and the person on the phone saidOriginally posted by daviejones View PostAre you saying that your Ethernet port is not working? Is it enabled?
no, you don't need an ethernet connection, you should be able to do it wirelessly
So I'm going to try and take my laptop into a major high-street PC provider
because i've got a warranty out on it and see if they can fix it!

I would suggest that orange can not charge you for cancellation if their box is not compatable with your PC. Tell them to make it work or take it away. Refuse to pay as your consumer rights state that the kit must be fit for purpose.
You can prove that your kit works because you can log on at airports etc.I am not qualified to give the above advice!

As with mobile phone contracts, don't broadband contracts come with a 14 day 'cooling-off' period where you can cancel and get a full refund?
Also, name and shame the PC Support Co. you used - was it The Tech Guys?Comment

How did the engineer know that the livebox was working in the first place?
have you tried another laptop to connect to the box. Is the livebox broadcasting its SSID if it is not then you will not see it when you scan for wireless networks.McCoy: "Medical men are trained in logic."

I do see it when my laptop scans for wireless networks. I just can't connect to it.Originally posted by lilelvis2000 View PostHow did the engineer know that the livebox was working in the first place?

He used his own laptop to connect to the livebox - the strange thing is that the livebox wasn't connected to the telephone point in the first place which makes the whole thing sound very fishy to me!

Orange have their own installers apparently - called Microtech. I bought the laptop from PC World (which is no recommendation but at least they're the only ones to try any constructive solution).Originally posted by Clippy View PostAs with mobile phone contracts, don't broadband contracts come with a 14 day 'cooling-off' period where you can cancel and get a full refund?

Have a look at this thread.

It mentions things like confusion between WEP and WPA and 802.11x security being enabled.McCoy: "Medical men are trained in logic."

Has the laptop got McAfee antivirus on it?
I have had problem getting laptops with McAfee antivirus on to wireless networks. Uninstalled it and it worked like a charm.
They could see the wireless network being broadcast. You do a View Wireless Networks and it shows a list of Choose a Wireless Network but dooesn't go past that. Doesn't get an ip address.
Give that a try or get someone else with a wireless laptop to try and connect. If they can then it's your laptop thats the problem.
You can PM me if you want some more help.

One of my laptops freezes completely when I use McAfee and connect to the internet. Try switching it to something else and see if you have any luck.Originally posted by Keldin View PostHas the laptop got McAfee antivirus on it?
