Not to bully, but I don't think anyone of us is an expert on the Orange Livebox.
Yes, I have found a dedicated Orange forum but
    a) I only found it after I had posted here first
    b) I know the expertise of people here more than I know the expertise of the forum members - I know this is silly but I would rather ask the opinion of someone I know than someone I don't.

      My best guess:

The security key is not what you think it is - you're typing it wrong, the default they say it is is wrong, someone changed it from the default

They have wep and wpa turned on (only need one) and its causing problems

Either way you need to get access to he thing and turn off security to test or find a way to wipe it back to default (which might not help)

I would like to thank everyone for their help. We have now got the wireless broadband working thanks to your helpful suggestions.

Also to warn about using Microtech (the company Orange use as set-up engineers) as the engineer they sent did not help us one bit and he was very user-unfriendly.

Can you tell us what the actual probem\solution turned out to be?

I just followed the instructions about linking to the Livebox suing a computer where the ethernet connection was working.
The first problem was that the security key that was set up when I pressed the connect button was incorrect and had to be set up to the security number of the livebox - a 26-digit key rather than a 10-digit key

When I actually got the livebox connection on the other computer, the livebox was transmitting on a different channel so the livebox was changed to transmit on a different channel and hey-presto, a connection.
