    Soldering connector onto external hd...

    I feel ever so clever.

I've just repaired an external hard drive by soldering the mini usb connector back on...

There was a tiny differential choke that had fallen off too, but it was too small to cope with (and had 4 connections to boot) so I replaced it with two bits of wire.

According to the student, it worked.

    I is amazed.

Had to use my illuminated magnifier and a magnifying visor thingie before I could see what I was doing.

It occupied an otherwise tedious half hour or so...

Nearly burned my nose with the soldering iron due to the high magnification requiring somewhat close work.

You actually FIX things that have broken? I thought one was supposed to just chuck such stuff into the river. We live and learn.
