I feel ever so clever.
I've just repaired an external hard drive by soldering the mini usb connector back on...

There was a tiny differential choke that had fallen off too, but it was too small to cope with (and had 4 connections to boot) so I replaced it with two bits of wire.
According to the student, it worked.
I is amazed.
Had to use my illuminated magnifier and a magnifying visor thingie before I could see what I was doing.
































It occupied an otherwise tedious half hour or so...
Nearly burned my nose with the soldering iron due to the high magnification requiring somewhat close work.
