SMS in the UK

Are there any java applications that send SMS. theres one here:

but its american and I would like to send to UK phones. And what exactly is a gateway?

Most people who don't want a hassle use a provider.

i.e. just send an email in a certain format, or do a POST.

i'm trying to find out what the mobile companies have got tied up. ie. why is it only them who allow sms sending. what hardware/software do you need to send?
