Can somebody please tell me why the search (data within files) doesn't damned well work in XP.

I've got a flashdisk with my website sources on it. Most files are .php with an assortment of others. I've register IE as the program associated with .php

Do a search on "all files containing" and a bit of text - naff all shows up (unless it happens to be a file name in which case the file with that name shows.

Do it here at work (Win 2000) and it works just fine.

it could be treating it as unicode? try renaming to .txt and see if the same search works, also check that all Os are not 0s

anyhow I suggest you get proper file manager with proper search - FAR (www.rarsoft.com)

I've noticed that and put it down to M$ being tulipe.

Yeah sure - I'll rename about 500 files every time I want to search them and then rename them back again afterwards - please note that they are not all php - some are htm and some (but not ones that contain anything sensitive) are .inc etc. etc.

do you have any tips on egg-sucking to go with that please?

I will take your and threadeds advice about looking for a decent altenative though (but not cygwin as I'm allergic to unix)

It's just bloody annoying that what is supposed to work doesn't - I tried a web search ages ago and found nothing of use. I suppose I could always try that again.

I was merely suggesting way to check if its unicode problem or not, no need to be arsey about it

get cygwin grep as threaded suggested as well

The weirdy is that it works on Win2k and I'm sure is used to work on XP too but now it doesn't.

check if built-in fast search indexer is on - I always turn it off, and I guess there might be different results depending if it was turned on or off - re unicode treatment. should not be really as its easy enough to detect if text file is likely to be ASCII or unicode.

It's got something to do with file typr registration - it seems to find stuff within preloaded file types but won't work for type php which I've added manually - I've setup both open and edit but it's still not working.

Meanwhile I've downloaded filelocatorpro and it seems pretty good. It's cheap too - I'll probably buy it.

I hope Bills piles are starting to bleed about now.
