For the MCSE types - replace domain controller

Okay, I have a PC acting as my domain controller (Win 2K server).

I would like to retire this pc and put in a fresh machine running Windows 2000 Server.

How can I do this and retain all the existing windows accounts?

I would be using any hardware (e.g. HDD) from the old machine, it's a completely new box.

    Cheers,

    DP.

    How about

Create the new machine as a backup domain controller then promote it once it has cloned ?

Disclaimer - I know absolutely F all about MS technology.

      Re: How about

Sounds plausible under Win NT, but Win 2K has Active Directory, forests and trees and god knows what else.

Does anyone know of an article that is a dummies guide to replacing an old server with a new one and keep the existing Active Directory/Domain settings?

        roughly?

rename old dc to foo and change its ip address

build the new server with the old dc name and the old dc ip address
        run dcpromo

move fsmo roles to your other dc. Also make sure it is a global catalog
        demote old dc

set up the proper services [dhcp/dns etc] on the new dc machine

Is this something the paperclip can help me with or is that only for writing a letter to me mum?

yes the paperclip will help you get the CD out of the drive when windows blue screens because you have a weird video card , you straighten it and poke it in the little hole .
