Saving your text as a .jpg picture - oh dear.
Flash menu - oh dear.

Even with IE - have you considered that different people have different version of IE. Different people have different screen resolutions - how will your site cope?

Old versions of Netscape are a nightmare - but if you check web logs you'll see it doesn't pop up very often. You should find that the main browsers are IE5 / 6 and Firefox. I'm not sure if I have ever seen Opera in a weblog.

Your site doesn't seem radically fast to load - try to keep it crisp.

I'm not sure that you'll get there with Frontpage.

You also seem a little overkeen on popup screens.

Anyway, I can't get it to "split in half down the middle".

I've seen plenty of Opera visitors.

It worked ok for me - I presume you've only done the front page as everything else I tried 404'd

I found the sound effects irritating but I'm a miserable old sod.

To stop that annoying save picture doobry appearing in IE if the user hasn't turned it off (it's on on this machine as I don't normally use it for browsing) add the following to your head section..

Thanks datastamp.

1. jpegs, should I be using another file type like .gifs?
2. Flash, I am working on a HTML version only using images and onmouseover/out, but want to get rest of site complete before that.
3. Checked with all recent versions of IE (5,5.5,6) and different resolutions (640 to 1280) without problems. Not sure about Firefox and Netscape if anyone out there has a copy would appreciate any feedback.
4. At the moment running on an old PC behind ADSL, 'nuff said.
5. Only using Frontpage with some remnants and forms from old site planning to move over to Dreamweaver completely, but this problem came up at this weekend and I wanted to try and get some advice pdq.
6. Disappointed about pop-up window, worked quite hard on that function, if you leave the pop-up window open and click on another link inside the main pages you should see the pop-up window being refreshed with new page rather than a new window opening, thought that was quite good and not abusive of pop-ups while at the same time giving me scope to provide more information without affecting the main pages.
7. about split- what browser are you using?

1. Index page has virtually no links done yet, others are almost complete, but didn't expect this problem and it can take some time to get responses on this section of the site so thought I'd better post my request for help now rather than later. If you go to other pages you'll find them more complete.

The IE image toolbar. If you don't turn it off in the IE options and hover the mouse over a picture bigger than some threshold or other it appears. The picture below shows it as seen by the browser I was using on my server which I was on earlier. Quite why Redmond thought this was a good idea I'll never know.

It is usually better to save text headings with special fonts as png or gif because they are both clearer and smaller in most cases. It is far better for body text to be err... text because...
1) some users set larger fonts so they can read the stuff - this is those with high res monitors and/or poor eyesight.
2) it consumes far less bandwidth
3) search engines don't index the words in pictures
4) errr... there are probably other reasons too but I can't think of them right now.

I don't see any problems with the page using FireFox

The various discrimination acts throughout the world such as the DDA in the UK, if it's in a picture then voice/braille interpreters can't read it nor can it be easily magnified.

I particularly liked the way I clicked on something and some of the front page bits came up in Latin. Ancient Romans must be a bit rare on the ground by now, but I suppose the few that are still around would use Netscape.

Just a quick note to say thanks to all those who have checked out the site for me and to the feedback I've received.

I've checked my web stats and all the major browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla) have been logged. With no-one posting a similar problem to mine, I think it is safe to say that my site should be OK in the corporate world, if not 100% in academia

I appreciate the comments about the text boxes, I thought I would be OK as each box either acts as a form or has a "read more" button associated with it, but I understand your comments about the search engines and disability issues so I'll take a look at that as I finish the site.

I have also been looking at generating .pngs and .gifs from ImageReady and there seems to be no issues there, so I can quickly change over. I actually use Fireworks for some image work and it prefers .pngs so I don't know why it didn't occur to me to generate them from ImageReady, a case of "can't see the wood for the trees" methinks

When the site is complete I'll publish details on the main board.
