    DNS question

I have Apache running on my broadband connection and would like it to be associated with a domain name. How do I go about doing this? I understand I need a nameserver and bind or something?

    Reynolds,

if you are a just finishing or recently graduated computer science student, the future careers of the rest of us are looking very secure.

First you need to know if you have a fixed ip - if so just register your domain through www.123-reg.co.uk/ (thanks for that tip vetran - they are very good) You will have fulls DNS control and can point your domain at your ip.

The answer is different if you have a dynamic ip - there are solutions to this but I'm not certain about the best one.

This site which Milan tries to pretend is not his is probably running on an adsl line so maybe he could put you in touch with whoever set it up for him (he is clearly too dense to have done it no matter how simple it is)

        re

I have a dynamic IP address, changes every few months or so. I actually have my account with 123-reg and can web-forward to my IP from it. No problem - the URL stays in the address bar. The problem is with Google Ads - they don't accept sites that don't have their web pages stored on the domain ie. I need pages like mydomain.com/docs/page.html instead of 0.0.0.0/docs/page.html

          oh dear reynolds,

looks like you have a problem.

Perhaps you should take a student loan and get some decent hosting instead of trying to cheapskate things on your broadband connection.

            Re: re

There are services which cater for that - I think you run something on your server as a cron job which updates their dns - checkout that no-ip thing - I'm sure a bit of patience with google will lead you to what you want - probably free too.

Milan - **** off back to general - you are out of your depth here.

                Re: re

It's you that needs patience not me - I've got a fixed ip but have no intention of running anything other than a development server on my network anyway - the uplink is too slow for any serious traffic and besides I need the bandwidth for the exchange of "educational" material ove p2p networks.

This google search should get you started.

That works for me. I host many of the pictures I display on other forums on my server here, at my home office, which is on Blueyonder cable.

It also makes it easier for me to surf to my email, access files, etc.

I use Novell's Small Business Suite 6. Check my profile for details.
