Nice alternative to IE: Firefox

yeah its getting there - I tried all builds of Mozilla ever since they released source code in 1998

... and they were all worse than IE

finally (after AOL cut funding) the team realised they should focus on building end product rather than fancy cross-platform thing and focus on its customers, thats how Firefox came about.

I dont think they have much chance though, as evolution of browsers seems to have stopped and next killer app became P2P

I use the Opera browser.
It's a good product and it's not MS stuff. Not that I'm anti MS per se but rather because most viruses etc. seem to be designed to exploit holes in MS products like IE and Outlook.
Opera costs £27 but its worth it (free if you can put up with ads).

Do checkout firefox

Its super lovely.

I scoffed, fairly, at previous Netscape/Mozilla/Gecko efforts,
as they were dire, but Firefox 0.8 is soooo nice.

Its free, you don't have to put up with ads, in fact has
a great advert blocker.

And it has so many plugins, many many more than IE.

I do like Firebird - but if you visit the Mozilla site these days you get Firefox instead. Firefox is newer but I'm not sure if I like it as much. The old Firebird web and Thunderbird email split kept things compact. (Yes I know that you can still get Thunderbird as a separate product).

Also, some users should be kept away from composer, IRC chat etc - so has anybody found a way to switch off the "window" menu?

i try them all a few times a year (new versions) and still IE6 is the best - I am a long time Netscape users, and Netscape 3 was better browser, but ever since IE4 Microsoft took off and all that bollox about free bundled version is just noise - its just a better browser.

bugger bugger bugger - I'm in agreement with AtW

I've tried lots of IE replacements over the years - the thing they all had in common was that they suck (imo naturally).

I'm currently using NetCaptor some of the time for it's popup blocking (it uses IE as the rendering engine) but don't like the tabbed interface much so I still use IE as well.

Next IE release is supposed to have a built in popup stopper so perhaps at last this annoying form of advertising will be consigned to the history books.

... and when all the free content sites decide to call it a day because there is no financial incentive to keep providing leeches with entertainment for nothing?

they should stfu and put content on pay per view or subscription basis - and THEN they will actually find out the value of their work. Public website should not expect to tell end used how to consume them - if your whole business model is based on intrusive ads (popup or not) then its your problem.

I am sure fiddle would agree with me
