    how to install oracle Apps?

    Hi,

I was told that installing oracle Apps is not a straight forward install. I have got all the dvd's I need from Oracle and would like to know if anyone can suggest a tutorial or website to follow on how to do a complete install.

    cheers

you must have a fast internet connection to even contemplate that!
I bought the packs off oracle for about £35, could not be bothered wih download.

you could try another web browser to download.

Are you already doing apps or looking at getting in ?

What are you trying to install it on? If Unix or Linux (which is recommended by the way) then try this website: -

            http://becomeappsdba.blogspot.com/20...ns-become.html

Windows XP is harder - I have installed it (11i) on WIndows XP successfully but it is difficult.

One problem is you need MKS Toolkit and Visual C++ installed (i.e. MS Visual Studio v.6). So if you aren't in the mood for forking out 800 quid for the two of them then you will need to acquire them from somewhere else.

Then you have the actual install, and it is very picky. Google it - there is a guy who has already done it who did some very good step by steps as you need to install make and that sort of thing as well as define host settings on your PC. I think this is it: -

            http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thre...art=0&tstart=0

Check out this thread for some discussions on it as well: -

However, it does mess up your PC if you use it for anything else like games and stuff (it adds hundreds of services) - and if you are a DBA I suggest you install it in Linux as that is what it will be on in the real world.

I am an Oracle Apps consultant and I am about to buy a cheap PC on which I am going to install Linux and then both 11i and the 12.0 - so I can use it for training at home. Once they are installed I will network in with my existing PC - it is the best way really. You just need an ok processor, 2 Gig of RAM and a massive hard disk (95 Gig for 11i and 160 Gig for 12.0).

thanks very much for the info

I was planing to install it on an xp so that It will be easier to practise, i.e change forms and reports.

Can I get away with installing it in vmware ?

No I don't think so - although you could obviously try it.

The installation manual for XP is fairly specific - MKS Toolkit is a requirement - and the installer asks for the MKS Toolkit path, so I doubt VMWare will be enough.

I would give serious thought to getting a cheap unix box. and keep it dedicated to oracle.

I have had lots of problems in the past trying to get a reliable install on windows or linux (although I wasnt using the same flavour of linux as they recommended).
found it much easier on solaris and hpux.

the sparc boxes that take ide drives are cheap/easy.

I think the general rule of thumb with oracle (especially the E-business suite) is that when you stray away from what they recommend (or in fact require) you are asking for trouble.

Oracle do their own version of Linux which apparently is the same as Red-hat (and unlike Redhat is free - although you don't get the support). The installation of 11i with it is fairly painless by all accounts. And as 11i is now developed on Linux as the primary operating system that is what I would expect. Although like I said - I haven't tried it (yet).

A dedicated box is definitely the best option though - it really does clog up your Windows XP install with all sorts of services etc.
