Yes. Slave the 120gb ghost the 40gb drive to a partition of the 120gb and then reimage the rest of the 120gb to that drive.

Job done.

Which of the four pins do I jump? I have never done this before so I don't know how to re-image it or the the purpose of it although though I'm sure it's necessary, if you don't mind please explain when you have a chance the process of a whole transfer. You would be put on my personal hero list.

Failing that, just use trial and error. You won't break anything if you get it wrong.

Not always absolutely true. Depends on what the jumpers do.

I cant be bothered to go look up the disk but I did once have a laptop drive that screwed up with the wrong jumper on it. Some sort of reset function. Think it was a toshiba.

I had similar problems with a WD disk when I tried to upgrade my laptop (HP). The whole thing would blue-screen after a while, so I bought a USB caddy and use the larger disk in that. I think the best way to upgrade a laptop is to buy the right disk (the same model as the existing machine) and do a clean re-install. Laptops are much more complicated than desktops.

If you don't know the jumper settings, then you could try this.

Are there 2 IDE ribbons in your PC? There are usually 2 IDE controllers. If there are 2 ribbons, you will find that one is connected to the HD and one to the CD/DVD. Both will probably be set to master. If your 40Gb disk was the master, then unhook the CD and use that connection.

If there is only one IDE ribbon in use, buy another and set the disk up as the master on that.

Or failing that, buy an external HD enclosure. I have an Icy Box at home which allows me to put a HD into it and connect it via USB/firewire. They are only about £10-£15 and I find them very handy.

After various issues with hard drives going pop and me having to spend time digging out the backups and/or recovering data from the drives I have decided to just get a NAS. 1TB worth of disks all set up in Raid 5 so i get about 700Gb of usable space, not bad for £500 (+ VAT of course) and the advantage is that I can get to everything from any machine on the local network without having to start turning on various machines trying to remember where i saved stuff.

Job done
