Reading the blurb it seems you need to install the client on your webserver, is that right? I though I could just generate the certificate locally and get my hosting provider to upload it?

The certificates they provide are quite short lived (90 days).
You can generate a certificate manually but you would be better off setting up the ACME client to renew the certificates automatically.

You can also get a completely free 3 year cert from startcom if you don't want to set up LE.
