That's the approach Apple takes and it works.

Their market share is <3% for a reason - if it was not for iPOD then nobody would have remembered Apple now.

.NET was designed with a view for forward compatibility - a lot of thought was put on based on experience in the past. But if Microsoft released OS that will only execute .NET code they would go bust, same for Intel if they released processor that would not be x86 compatible - they tried a couple of times and it was a complete loss.

Wot, that they actually have standards that they enforce?

Mind you, in a former life the business I was running tried to get "apple certification" but we gave up because the entire process was a joke. We were trying to do them a favour by selling their hardware BUT they had the opinion that it was the other way around, they were doing us a favour by letting us stock their hardware.

Also, had an interesting discussion with a die hard AMD fan this morning...going on about the cons of going back to the dark side and how Id have to upgrade everything yadda yadda yadda. BUT thats not really a problem because if I wanted to upgrade to dual core AMD Id still have to change my motherboard anyway.

So I thought now would be a good opportunity anyway to change sides. Nice cheap upgrade that also gives me a path in to Intels latest and greatest hardware when it becomes cheaper.

As I said earlier, this is a big step as I havent had an Intel platform since I had an overclocked Celery300a running at 450mhz.

At least when I write software for Windows NT 2000 threading I know that it will run on all versions of Windows now and later (counting from NT 2000) without making user bend over backwards to download and recompile different thread libraries with infinite number of dependencies, yuck, if Linux was not free then almost nobody would have used it.

I shouldn't be to sure about maintaining backwards compatibility, there appeared to be a healthy market in old Windows 98 at one point because of legacy (Windows target not DOS) S/W that would NOT run on later versions of Windows.

So the backwards compatible threading only goes back to Windows NT 2000, whatever happened to the good old stalwarts Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

Their market share may be < 3%, but that doesn't mean that they don't build quality systems or that they don't have a specific market that wouldn't contemplate using anything else - like designers for example.

OSX is a very nice OS that has all the power of a Unix but all the usability of Windows. It truly is the best of both worlds.

I managed to RMA a brand new socket AM2 motherboard, and a dual core 4400+, as soon as I found a site that had the Intel E6600.... it is significantly more responsive when running multiple applications, is superb for a development workstation, with the rest of the components the same. It also runs cooler.

But, as I pointed out on my first post in this thread, it's now hard disks that are usually the bottleneck. SATA RAID - WD Raptors are good, but ideally, SCSI will still win out on that one, I would imagine.

Good memory is a must for overclocking.. cooling is getting cheaper every quarter.

I mentioned to the cabin boy that I might let him build a dual-thingy machine. Whata mistaka ta maka!

He has been blinding me with science about what processor to buy. Like an idiot I say what is the best. He comes back with loads of rabit about Intel Extreme's and Toledo's. I looked them up on eBuyer and they are about 500 squid a pop!!!!!

It's time to put my management socks and undies on. I need a executive overview on what the range of is and I need some cost-benefit analysis of them. Anyone know of a good article like that?

I started reading the tomshardware one and it was going over my head.I think that is what the cabin boy has been reading. I'm not into the hardware anymore. I'll try one of the others.
