My code is always beautiful so I've never needed one! -
Since I stopped using line numbers for all my code I've found that drawing small pictures or engravings in the margins seem to help.
Failing that you can just add assorted comments like you see in old literary works, e.g. "this is just a hack until will think of a better way of writing it"...
