2 Virus Checkers 1 PC

I just want to ask your opinion on a question a client is asking.
Some time ago they client had the Crypto Virus affect a PC because a user opened a *.pdf.exe
They had Symantec installed on all their desktops but it slipped through as we think it was only scheduled to update on Sundays as some one had tinkered with the settings on that PC. Anyway , the PC was rebuilt and as a precaution malwarebytes 30 day trial was also installed as a Second virus/malware checker by their support guys?

As a temporary measure to get rid of a specific nasties - it's OK.

You don't want this on a permanent basis, the effort required to actually get 2 products to work at the same time and to keep them updated, properly configured for exceptions etc. is huge. Add in the licensing cost and it's just not worth it only to eventually catch the odd exotic virus that one of them might miss.

At the end of the day there is no 100% virus proof solution.

In your case i suspect that better management of the Symantec installations, regular checks if the clients are up-to-date, locked settings so the users can't mess with it etc. plus some education of the user base will be much better approach.

Sticking multiple AVs just to cover their butts is a typical permie move.

My experience of this is really bad. They'll fight worse than a wife meeting a mistress.

What is needed is a defence in depth solution, the desktop should not be the last line of defence. Can AV be put on email and web filters? Alternatively scan on one system with one AV solution before moving any files to the next.

You can have a thousand Virus Scanning products on, but if that is the only protection you have you are still screwed as they only detect viruses that are already there.

What preventative action is take? Are USB ports locked down? Are incoming Emails Scanned etc?
