Trying out Chrome - how do they make it so fast?

The other day I was over at a friend's business and though his PC's were piss slow - Chrome ran like lightening on them. So now I'm trying it out. It appears to be soooo much faster than IE8. How do they do that?

Odd IE8 problem??

If I view CUK via Chrome or Firefox everything is fine but when I use IE8 the newest post is 6 hours old?? I first noticed this yesterday but thought it was website problem.

WTF is going on?
