My old laptop got riddled due to the java vulnerabilities, chrome stopped working and IE was restricting what sites I was viewing.

You can start firefox in safe mode (hold the shift key when starting firefox) and see if that works - if it does then disable all the extensions and add-ins until you work out which is causing the issue.
I think there's a similar thing in IE.
