Thanks All - fixed it now!

Downloaded Hi-Jack this, ran in Safemode, found the tmp file - hp0003.tmp or something like that, removed with smitrem.. all good now!

Only took a few minutes!

Friend of mine had that. I had to download Firefox on my laptop, copy it to his, install it, then use Firefox to download the MS Anti-Spyware software (now called Defender I think), then run that. IE was completely screwed and unusable during this whole process but the above steps cured it eventually.

Firefox on it's own ain't that great - something in clamav hijacked it to bloomberg.com just after installing mepis - I had to add a shedload of blockers in my /etc/hosts
