I've got a PAYG Vodafone Dongle with non-expiring credit but I'm not sure if they sell them any more. With their new ones, unused credit disappears after 30 days, but I'm sure you could pick the non-expiring ones on flea bay or summat. It's £15/Gb but I've found when I'm working away that email, a bit of surfing and maybe a couple of 'educational video streams' doesn't really use a whole lot.

Thanks very much for the tip, I will probably buy it. I rang up T-mobile and they are offering me the modem for free on the condition that I take a £10 contract for 18 months. As I cant put it through the company and also only need it 3/4 times a whilst on call etc. So I don't want tie downs and cant justify it.

I just bought this MiFi device for £49.99 (including a £10 topup), unlocked it here (for 10 Euros) and am using a SIM card from here which cost £5 and gives me 1Gig of data a month for free for life (aside from the £5 upfront/1-off cost which is credited to your account).
Ovivo Mobile runs on Vodafone's network and I get pretty decent speeds where I am. They do show you adverts but I conveniently found out that if connected to a VPN server, the traffic isn't routed to the ad server, so they are clearly only directing HTTP traffic
The Huawei device is amazing for the size, 5 hour battery life and supports up to 5 active wifi connections at any one time. Connected by USB it behaves as a standard USB "dongle".

That said I have tethered the blackberry only as a connection of last resort, it is pretty slow, and the 3 MiFi seems brilliant. A friend had one in Italy last year, we just put a local sim in it and, hey presto, a billable week from an olive grove whilst the kids surfed and played games!

3g phone / ipad + giffgaff sim card, no contract and it works great. You can create a wifi lan if you use an iphone or similar.
