Just another place to stash copies really. When I started with this ISP they had a backup request button somewhere in the control panel and offered to do restores on a chargeable basis. I assumed that service wouldn't be cheap so made sure I took copious backups of my web stuff onto my own systems. They no longer offer that service, at least not with the package I have.

In the event of a disaster they do promise to do their best at restoring data. They have redundant kit in the data centre and have an alternate site to fall back to if the whole data centre gets hit etc, so obviously take the subject seriously (and that was one of the reasons I chose them).

Obviously large customers will get priority if anything goes tits up, and they do have some very large customers.

I need to read my T&Cs again, but I could in theory at least shove a load up there.

maxed out at 22 gb or so as i was sharing a virtual environment to a client the other week. got 12gig free at the moment. i'm only a freebee really. but probably not for long. need a multi terabyte backup in place first though for reasons 8tuu and diver warn.

A little added info:- box.net have individual file upload limits of 100MB. They do not have a desktop sync program (unless you're willing to pay to upgrade your account type), however you can find instructions to mount their free storage as a network drive to make it much easier to use.

Synology have just launched a 'cloud' app for the disk station. Have installed it but haven't used it in anger yet. Will report back if it's any good.

Having it synced on several PCs IS a secondary level of backup... you can even view DB as a tool just for keeping mirrored copies.

I don't think keeping your own server is inherently safer. A disk can die or someone could steal it... so you need multiples in different locations. Backups on tape/etc might or might not be usable, you never know until you try them. And so on. I'm confident the risk a cloud service offers is significantly better than the amateur setup I could put together... and for the cost of a half-decent local system you could run your data through 3 separate cloud systems.
In fact I think I read that's what Apple do for their cloud thing... run on Amazon AND Azure both for double security and to avoid (ironically) vendor lock-in.

I even keep backup copies on external harddrives in my fireproof safe.
