    Don't know if you want to go this route, but:

    Sparkle

    Sparkle is a free Mac OS X software framework designed to simplify updating software for the end user of a program. Sparkle supports checking for updates via appcasting. WinSparkle seeks to replicate Sparkle's functionality for Windows developers.
    and

    Sparkle for Windows

    WinSparkle is a heavily (to the point of being its almost-port) inspired by the Sparkle framework by Andy Matuschak that became the de facto standard for software update on Mac OS X.

    ClientCo's software is mainly for studio use where most workstations aren't connected to the internet hence someting standalone that they can use on their personal machines.

    Write a plugin?

    That would be in the browser, so they visit a site which loads a plugin locally and tells them they need to update. The plugin could check the local version and remote version and decide what to do.

    How to do this?

    ClientCo occasionally have updates to their core software but users need to login to their account to see if any are available.

    What would be good if possible;

    A browser plugin that would notify the user that updates are available with a download link. It wouldn't be necessary that anyone was actually logged into their account, a simple notification would be enough.

    Any plugin would need to work in all browsers or at least IE, Firefox and Safari.

    How to go about this?
Working...
