Thanks for the advice, I'm unsure if the fibre comes to our house, I "thought" the fibre only went to the nearest BT street cabinet with existing copper to the house. I hope to remain with our current provider (VISPA) rather than go with BT. I'll ask them for advice now that I (think I) know what I'm asking.

I thought they were doing Fibre To The Cabinet, and then ADSL for the last bit which means you don't need any new equipment or even notice any difference (apart from speed obviously). But reading that suggests it's VDSL, which means being forced to use BT's router.

Well, neat. I went to BT - The Race to Infinity which is quite cool to vote for my exchange.
But I checked on the forums and from this BT infinity fibre optic being installed on Tuesday - Broadband Internet - Digital Spy Forums one...it looks like you get a new modem. Which should suit your setup fine. BT should supply the modem.
Others with combined adsl modem and router - like my Vigor - will probably have to run the router in bridge mode. ie: turn the adsl bit off and connect the BT modem into one of the RJ45 ports.

I believe most new BT customers get a BT Home Hub free, it's a DSL modem/router/wireless jobby.

Connecting to BT Infinity for internet?
I have seen the BT people laying the new cables for BT Infinity which we are due to be able to access in December this year. It is long overdue as we currently have extremely poor ADSL service. I'm using a Thomson ADSL Modem connected to a Belkin Wireless router. Presumably I can still use the Belkin Router, but what hardware will I need to buy to replace the Thomson ADSL Modem? Sorry, I have no idea what BT Infinity actually is, though the BT website reckons I'll get upto 17Mb/sec download speed compared to my miserable, unreliable 512kb/sec (when it works).
