Previously on "Home networking with Devolo ip over power"
Lots of people have lots of bad things to say about those things!
That's helpful
I don't have any experience of the "wireless extenders" but powerline adapters work fine for me.
Is there any particular reason you need the stuff in the cellar? Might be simpler to either plug into a phone line upstairs or alternatively lay some cat 5 from the kit in the cellar to a wireless router above ground. Or just use powerline adapters the same way as a transparent link to a standard wireless router or access point upstairs?
I've got a US Robotics Wireless MAXg ADSL Gateway (US). That's connected to my ADSL line, my desktop computer, and a standard Devolo power over IP adapter. It sits in my cellar, and works fine.
I then plugged a Devolo "dLAN Wireless Extender" (D1) into a socket in my living room. And one into an upstairs room. (D2)
I could then get onto the internet, from my living room with my laptop, connected to D1. But that was using the factory settings, which aren't secure. So I configured D1 with an SSID, and WPA2 security with a passphrase. And then I couldn't connect to the net anymore via D1 anymore. I configured D2 similarly.
I can still connect the laptop wirelessly via US, and then I can also get to the configuration screens of D1 and D2. But when connect the laptop to D1 or D2 wirelessly, I can't see any of the other devices. I.e. from D1, I can't see D2 nor US - nor can I connect to the internet.
When laptop is connected wirelessly to US, the Devolo Informer utility shows me D1 and D2. When connected to D1, it shows US and D2. When connected to D2, it shows only D1.
Finally, when connected to D1 or D2, the laptop connects, but with limited connectivity.
So, what's wrong and how can I fix it?
I'm thinking perhaps it's something to do with the US Robotics firewall? Maybe I need to configure the router so that the Devolo devices can get to the net through it.
