VMWare keyboard mapping

I have an XP virtual machine running on VMware on Ubuntu 8.
All works happily. It is my master dev environment.

I just scored some development work that needs me to be on the road. So I rebuilt my laptop to run the same Ubuntu version and copied the VM across. All works merrily and a shot in the arm for using virtual machines as a dev environment.

However on the lappy when in the virtual machine the keyboard mappings are screwed. Shift M gives you a 0 etc etc.

I tried a couple of things from google around adding mapping rules to the config file but not really any further forward.

If I switch to the host the keyboard mappings are sound so it is defo the VM or the way the host is interpreting the keycodes.
