This is where I am confused because if my ad hoc network is active on the host there won't be an internet connection to share (because it won't be active, only the ad hoc connection is active). The internet connection is only active when I choose to connect to it & this renders the ad hoc network inactive, i.e. the 2 seem to be mutually exclusive. I am definitely missing something here.

On XP, you have to enable Internet Connection Sharing so that the windows box provides an IP address to the client (i.e. your phone). NOt sure how Vista works but I assume it's pretty similar?

No, only USB via cradle which I don't have. Device has bluetooth + inrared but my so called dog's bollocks spec laptop has neither.Originally posted by xoggoth View PostCan't help on the networky stuff but does your mobile has a USB port or Bluetooth for PC connection? If so, Windows Mobile device centre, free from MS site, works great for Vista/Win 7 to CE 5.0 or better.
I believe it connects automatically via a network too so maybe it will auto detect and sort whatever you have wrong.

Ad Hoc Networking Woes
Trying to get a mobile device connected to my laptop via an ad hoc network but am having a nightmare (Windows mobile 6 -> Vista Home Premium).
Have set up the ad hoc network and enabled internet connection sharing as per all the blogs out there (don't really want to use the internet connection - just want to share files ) but can't get it to work at all.
After setting up the ad hoc network (no security), the icon on the status bar tells me I am connected to it. Then I scan available networks on the mobile device & connect to the new ad hoc network. It tells me I'm connected but problem is, an IP is never assigned - I just see 0.0.0.0 so this is never going to work. Furthermore, when I go into network neighbourhood on the host pc, I'd expect to see my mobile device listed there but there is nothing.
The other thing I don't understand is that if I wanted to share my internet connection and use it through my mobile device, what should be the active connection on the host (i.e. the one indicated on the status bar)? If my usual wireless internet connection is active, I can't connect at all from the mobile (though it still sees the ad hoc network when I scan wirelss networks from the mobile).
If the ad hoc network is active I can connect (or so it tells me even though no IP is assigned) but there is no internet connection available to share as it isn't active. This is supposed to be simple but I'm completely confused. I also can't use activesync as I have no cradle or Inrared port. Thanks in advance.Tags: None
